Thats not very long, considering human contact could be potentially life saving. What about phones? I imagine it would take a day or two for them to go down, but then again I'm just assuming.

Well, if such a thing was happening the ervers would probably fart out as soon as the "Great Panic" started. People calling others left and right. Think how bad the phone companies wre during 9/11. Now im not comparing that tragedy to a fictional event but in the book it created such the same panic but it lasted over a month. I would say literally any public means of communication besides pigeon carriers and smoke signals would be rendered unuasable very soon

I was living in NYC at 9/11 time, so I can speak to the phone question somewhat:
- Cell phones were useless for a day or so after the towers went down because much of the infrastructure (switching stations, towers, etc) was on or in the towers. Cell service was back up in a day or two, though.
- Landlines were working but with the massive load (many more people calling than usual and all cell phone users forced onto the landline bandwidth) it was hard to call anyone in the city. I was able to call my parents out of state, though, and ask them to relay messages to the rest of family and friends. Landlines were fine again within 24 hours.
- Internet continued to work fine, AFAICR.
In short, the communications blackout wasn't total and didn't last more than 24 hours. Granted, during the undead uprising, it will be much harder to get repair crews into affected areas. But I think you might be surprised at the resilience of our national comnet.

- Internet continued to work fine, AFAICR. Woo, thank god. Can you imagine if everyone lost access to their porn? Now THAT's a horror story.

Set up internet kiosks all over the place with Zombie Porn on slideshow mode! This would ensure that the undead hordes are too distracted to eat our tasty brains!

And just like that, porn saves humanity. There is something beautiful about that.

I know I am necroing an old post but I found an online manga that interested me. Not just because of the T&A but of the storyline. Aptly named, "High School of the Dead" it is about a group of high School Students who are caught unawares at their high school during a zombie pandemic. the story follows them and their quest of survival. worth taking a few mintues to look at if your interested in the genre www.onemanga.com/Highschool_of_the_Dead/1/01/sorta kinda NSFW
