OKAY! Now I have time for my review.
Loved it.
That really sums it up but I guess I can elaborate. I grew up on Star Trek. I was a kid during TNG, but my mom had all of the original series on VHS, so we watched those too. My parents are serious geeks when it comes to Sci-Fi. We would sit down to watch Star Trek just about as often as we'd watch Sesame Street. But I'll back up here and admit that I'm not a psycho Trekkie. I don't walk around in a Star Fleet uniform (I don't have one, although my sister does from back when she'd dress up in it every Halloween). I don't have replicas of all the ships hanging from my ceiling. However, we did name our cocker spaniel Tasha after Tasha Yar. She was the best. Along with that . . . Star Wars? Eh. Star Trek, WOO! I know that's blasphemy to most people but I don't begrudge you your disgust and sudden loss of any possible existing respect you had for me. Star Wars just never rocked my socks. Sorry. I've come to the realization that everyone makes fun of trekkies, even geeks. Trekkies are the kids that the Star Wars kids make fun of for being totally lame. Trekkies are the geeks of the geeks. And I don't have a problem with that. I'm quite proud of it actually.
This being said, I'm okay with a little stretching of the canon. So I had no fear or trepidation about canon rape as I awaited this movies as I know many hardcore trekkies did. I had nothing but happiness and excitement because I've had a long growing faith in JJ Abrams.
But then they did something that allowed them to do anything they wanted (like destroying something pretty important to the canon - you'll know what I mean when you see it) without ACTUALLY destroying canon. I found this to be quite smart and refreshing. The casting was quite awesome. I wasn't sure about Chris Pine at first, but he's totally hot in my eyes how and has nice comic timing.
The script and story is quick and smart and has a lot of the things the original show was known for. Including wonderfully funny moments. If you really watched the original series, you know that the show is actually quite witty and downright funny sometimes. JJ went out of his way to make sure this feeling came to the big screen as well.
Cinematography wise, this thing was beautiful. The battle scenes, the ship, the landscapes. I also really liked the updated version of the costumes that were much more modern but still a throwback to the original show. Though the women still wearing short skirts makes me shake my head, but I understand why he kept it.
And as my friend Jeremy said, "The music was pretty epic."
Okay, this has clearly become tl;dr, so I'm sorry for that and I'll finish quickly.
I liked this movie and have already seen it twice. I hope to see it again this week with my parents. Maybe some trekkies will be pissed off at it but I honestly wouldn't know why. It's a great film. I'll be buying it the day it comes out.
That is all.

I'm just glad the tech looked appropriate for the time. Unlike in Enterprise, where everything looked fancier than Voyager and the Defiant.

Okay, I'm sold. I wasn't planning on seeing it, but you've convinced me to give it a chance. For the record, I've always been a "hard SF" fan, so while I liked Trek, I've never been a Trekkie, and didn't have episodes on tape or anything. My main objection was "c'mon, you've been mining this franchise for years, now, how about coming up with something ORIGINAL?" but then, that's usually my response to a sequel.

I'm glad the writers went with alternate reality so they could start series fresh not to be constrained with past character stories. its what this franchise needed.
