If you don't know who he is, don't feel bad. Most people don't even though he's one of the most prolific serial killers in America and almost became the first confessed serial killer to be set free from the US prison system in 2006.
He killed in Texas and Detroit in the 70s and early 80s. He made a plea bargin to admit to the murders and give information and the courts would make him immune to murder charges. He admitted to killing 12 or so women but was only charged for burglary and attempted murder and sentenced to 60 years. He later confessed to having killed at many as 80 women, though officials are now putting the number around 100, making him the most prolific serial killer in American history.
He died of prostate cancer on September 21, 2007 in a Michigan hospital. His death went pretty much unnoticed because no one here really knows who he is. At least not the younger generation of Detroiters. I only really know about him because I know the family of one of the victims.
He told his lawyer straight out that if he was ever released, he would kill again. The state of Michigan made sure he'd never be released when they charged him for a murder he didn't have immunity for in 2004, but now we know for sure that he'll never hurt anyone again.

I never thought I'd be cheering for cancer. Go, little tumors! Good job! I hope this is a relief to your friends (the victim's of the family), as opposed to being a reminder of bad history.

They had to relive it recently when he was charged again in 2004. They went to the trial and when he was convicted, they went out with the other families to celebrate. I haven't talked to them yet, but I'm sure they know of it. Hopeful it will be closure.
