Neil Gaiman and brilliant writing are generally a given.

I'll take loose plot and CGI over witty and progressive script writing any day of the week

The movie was ok. Silly, but ok. It belongs, not in a Greatest Movies thread, but rather in a Movies I Saw that didn't Utterly Suck.

Oh the movie was better than okay. It wasn't MUCH better, but it was a fun, good time. I saw it in the theaters more than once and happily accepted it as a birthday/Christmas present (because I didn't have to pay for it myself). I think I've watched it once since then. There were explosions and hot guys and HUGE FREAKING ROBOTS so it's not like it was going to automatically fail, even being a Michael Bay movie.
Of course opinion might differ between people who actually use to play with the toys/watch the show and people who never really had a big Transformers influence on their young life. I was just so excited to see Optimus Prime, he probably could have stepped on a puppy and I wouldn't have minded all that much.

I'd like to second "Princess Bride" (I've watched that one a zillion times!) and add "Stardust"
While I'm adding, here's some more: Ong-Bak Crouching Tiger The Incredibles Jimmy Neutron (I want some of his gadgets!) Altered States

At the risk of re-lighting a fire, I'm interested in recommendations. I've been very out of the loop over the last year, I don't remember the last movie I saw in the theater, and I don't even have cable TV. Actually, I don't even own a TV at all. So, what are great recent movies? I need ideas on what to rent and such.

Star Trek would be a good place to start.

I keep meaning to watch that one, and somehow I've managed to not catch Avatar, which is unforgivable I admit. I'm having a hard time finding time for movies: my landlord is in bankruptcy and the house is in foreclosure. Man this sucks.

That does suck. but think of it this way. the house will be in foreclosure whether you go to the movies or not. So you might as well go to the movies.
