A comic for you, and the end of a long, emotional arc.
Major props to the Insolent One for his winning villain entry. we've been surprised (and impressed) with the way that the contest winners have affected the story. Shield was meant to have his prize-arc and be done with it, and instead he became a reliable secondary character. The Coroner has made his only appearance, but he's impacted the comic in a way that the previous villains have not. This is partially by design, as the truly important aspects of the comic aren't necessarily depend ant on the villains, who are largely as goofy and tied up in bureaucracy as the heroes.
Still, it was high time for someone to remind us all that the strong, competent heroes have their adversaries, too. Knowing that the Coroner wouldn't become a recurring villain, we wanted to make sure that his appearance meant something, which lead us to the decision that someone important had to die.
A word on Kyoko and Dion MaNatta. Like many of our characters, these two (originally created by Laura) have been a part of our personal projects for the past 14ish years. They've lived through their entire lives in more than one reality and set of stories, so even though they never appeared before as major characters in Sidekick Girl, their motivations and personalities are as fully realized as any of the main cast. Personally, I think this arc allowed us to really illustrate the most important parts of them. Kay was a warm, giving person who touched a lot of hearts. Dion is powerful, outwardly angry and ruthless, yet inwardly vulnerable.
The really important thing, though was that this arc deepened the tone of the comic considerably. It added a darker, more serious facet, and brought out more opinions and heated discussion here than anything had before. Since the purpose of art is to make an emotional impact on the viewer, I'd say it was pretty darn successful.
So...yeah. Good Times.
