How can ANYONE think that banning abortion is even possibly defensible? This is a HUMAN LIFE we're talking about! You're DESTROYING A WOMAN'S LIFE if you force her to have a baby that was conceived in rape, or incest, or that was an accidental conception when her birth control failed, or when the birth of the child endangers the mother's life, or when the mother lacks the resources (financial/emotional/etc) to raise and nurture a child. Oh, sure, "but just give the child up for adoption" you say...I call BS. Nine months of pregnancy, post partum depression, permanent changes to her body, a certainty of agonizing pain and some risk of **death** during the birth (yes, lots of women still die in childbirth, even in the First World). And then let's not forget the ongoing emotional trauma of knowing that there's a child in the world that you created but had to give up. And all just so that some Christians too stupid to use their brain instead of expecting a Bronze Age book to do their thinking can feel comfortably smug because they've shoved their religious prudery up our noses once again.

Hm. It was a whole lot harder to present these abortion views in a funny way than the gun control thing. The two positions are so extreme, so fanatical, so overly zealous that it's actually difficult to parody them.

While I appreciate the the spirit behind posting two threads on the same topic, I think it will better facilitate honest discussion to just have one. Therefore, I'm closing the second thread.
Also, because this is possibly the most emotionally intense controversial issue facing us today, let us be extra careful to be respectful of each other's opinions and feelings.

In all honesty, I posted the "gun control" and "abortion" threads for the humor, in much the same way that the original "Controversial Topic" thread was posted. The gun control threads were pretty easy to present in parody form, and only later morphed into serious (and, I thought, excellent) discussion. The abortion threads didn't really work as humor, and I should have just nuked the posts when I realized that they weren't coming off. I think we're probably better off just closing them. Sorry for waving a match around the powderkeg.

No, this is fine. Like I said, I understand the spirit of the joke. This is something that is very important to a lot of people, and if thety want to talk about it, fire away. It doesn't need to be closed unless it starts getting violent.

Well, I am a Christian, have been since 1995. Just because that's the Church's view, however, doesn't make it mine. Those are all some valid reasons to have an abortion. What I think Christian fanatics have a problem with is specifically one of the Commandments is "Thou shalt not kill." I think SOME Christians take it to extremes, and say, "Well, God says we shouldn't kill, so we shouldn't allow anyone to kill anyone." However, look at the world we live in today. With home invasions, drive-bys, and terrorism, it's amazing we're not awash in a river of blood. I think, personally, what God meant is "Thou shalt not take a life maliciously." That makes a lot of sense to me, because if you are defending your family and your home, essentially, you're killing 1 person to save, maybe 6. I think God could get behind that, because it is a net of 5 people who would have otherwise died, saved. While I personally hope to never have to make that decision, and think I wouldn't want my eventual girlfriend/wife/significant other to go there, I would like to believe like one of our founding fathers did: "I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it." In other words, I may disagree with abortion, but I'm certainly not about to deny someone else their right to have an abortion. Their body, their life, their choice. I also think that some other of the Church's edicts are...in dire need of updating, but that's a discussion for a later time.

Seriously, that's the replies you had? Gee people, come shout with us. We have cookies XD
So, I'm not Christian, and I'm not of any religion ... I think ... So I won't go there. One thing I like to point out is that in almost all monotheist religions out there, you have "My god is the one and only. He is full of love and tolerance. But if you don't believe in him, then go f*** yourself in hell" And now I'm regretting posting that. Oh Well ...
So Anyway, abortion. Yes, of course it's a good thing. I'm not saying all women should abort whenever they get pregnant, that would be stupid. But like Whitehawke said, with all the crap we have going on all over the world (rape, incest, pedophilia, stuff like that) we absolutely need abortion. It's sad but true. And for all those who are so very upset every time someone get abortion, you try to give birth and raise a child when you are 15, broke and traumatized for life.
I often feel like I should be smarter when I post something on a forum. Now is one of those times. Weird ...
